What Is Raydium and Why Do Memes Graduate There?

By Alphacino Editorial Team ·

Quick Take

Graduation moves a token off pump.fun's bonding curve and into a real liquidity pool — here's why that jump matters.

Every Solana meme coin trader has heard the word "graduate" thrown around, and it almost always means one thing: the token just moved from pump.fun to Raydium. Understanding why that jump matters is the difference between reading a chart and actually understanding what's happening underneath it.

Raydium is Solana's largest automated market maker (AMM) — a decentralized exchange where tokens trade against pooled liquidity instead of a traditional order book. Pump.fun, by contrast, launches tokens on a bonding curve: price moves purely as a function of how much SOL has been deposited into the curve, with no external liquidity pool involved. That's fine for a brand-new token finding its legs, but it caps how much real trading volume and depth a coin can support.

Graduation is what bridges the two. Once a pump.fun token's bonding curve hits a set market cap threshold (roughly $69K historically), the platform automatically migrates the accumulated liquidity into a Raydium pool and burns the LP tokens. The coin now trades as a standard SPL token pair, accessible to every DEX aggregator, every Solana wallet swap function, and every serious trading bot on the chain — not just pump.fun's own interface.

For traders, graduation is a meaningful signal, not a guarantee. It proves the token generated enough real buying pressure to clear the curve, which filters out a huge share of tokens that die in their first hour. But it says nothing about the team's intentions post-graduation — dumps, fake volume, and slow bleeds happen on Raydium just as easily as anywhere else. What graduation does buy you is liquidity depth and exposure to a wider trading audience, which is exactly why so many traders watch the "about to graduate" list as closely as new launches themselves.
