Market Cap vs. FDV: What Meme Traders Miss
By Alphacino Editorial Team ·
Quick Take
The market cap on your screen can be a fraction of what a token's supply will actually be worth.
Two numbers sit right next to each other on every token page, and most traders only look at one of them. Market cap tells you circulating supply times price — the value of tokens actually out in wallets and trading right now. Fully diluted valuation, or FDV, tells you what that same token would be worth if every token that will ever exist were already circulating. On a lot of Solana meme coins, the gap between those two numbers is where people get blindsided.
Most pump.fun launches have 100% of supply circulating from the jump — no vesting, no locked team allocation, so market cap and FDV are basically the same number. That's actually one of the cleaner parts of the fair-launch model. But plenty of tokens, especially ones with VC backing or a more traditional launch structure, hold back large chunks of supply for the team, advisors, or future unlocks. On those, market cap can look tiny and cheap while FDV — the real full-supply picture — is ten or twenty times higher.
The danger is straightforward: you buy in looking at a market cap that seems to have room to run, without realizing that a wall of unlocked supply is scheduled to hit the market in the coming weeks or months. When those tokens unlock, holders sell, and price gets pushed down toward the FDV-implied value regardless of how much hype is in the room. A coin that looked "early" on market cap alone can actually be priced richly once you account for everything that isn't circulating yet.
Before sizing a position, always pull up both numbers and check the tokenomics for unlock schedules. If market cap and FDV are close, supply is mostly out already, and there's less overhang risk. If FDV dwarfs market cap, ask why the rest of supply is locked and when it unlocks — that's the number that actually tells you what you're paying for.
