Two numbers sit right next to each other on every DexScreener chart, look similar, and get confused constantly: market cap and fully diluted valuation. Mixing them up is one of the fastest ways to misjudge how "cheap" or "expensive" a meme coin actually is — and on Solana, where most tokens launch with their full supply already minted, the gap between the two can be the whole story.
Market cap is simple: circulating supply multiplied by current price. It tells you the value of tokens actually in the hands of holders and available to trade right now. FDV takes it a step further — total supply (including anything not yet circulating, locked, or vested) multiplied by current price. It's the theoretical value of the token if every single unit that will ever exist were unlocked and priced at today's rate.
For most pump.fun-style meme coins, this distinction barely matters because the entire supply is minted and circulating from block one — there's no vesting schedule, no team unlock cliff, no investor allocation waiting in the wings. Market cap and FDV are often identical or very close for these tokens. But for projects with more traditional tokenomics — team allocations, VC rounds, staged unlocks — FDV can dwarf market cap by 5x, 10x, or more.
That gap matters because it represents future sell pressure. A token trading at a "small" market cap but a massive FDV means there's a wall of supply waiting to hit the market as it unlocks, and every unlock event is a potential dump on existing holders. A trader who only checks market cap and ignores FDV can walk into a token that looks cheap today but is structurally set up to bleed for months.
The habit worth building: always check both numbers before you size a position, and ask what's driving any gap between them. On Solana meme coins specifically, a wide market-cap-to-FDV gap is unusual enough that it's worth investigating exactly why before you buy.
