How to Spot a Solana Rug Pull Before It Happens

Every rug pull looks obvious in hindsight. The trick is catching the red flags while the chart's still green and the Telegram's still hyped. On Solana, where a new token can launch and die in the same afternoon, the tells are almost always on-chain — you just have to know where to look before you ape.

Start with liquidity. If the token's past its pump.fun bonding curve and sitting on Raydium, check whether the LP is locked or burned. An unlocked LP means the deployer can pull it whenever they want, instantly, with zero warning — that's the single most common rug mechanic there is. No lock, no burn, no trust.

Next, check who actually owns the supply. Pull up the holder list and look at the top 10 wallets. If a handful of addresses — especially ones that look freshly created or are clustered together — hold 30-40% or more of the supply outside the LP, that's concentrated exit liquidity waiting to happen. One coordinated sell from that group can crater the price before retail even sees the candle.

Check the contract itself. Has mint authority been revoked, or can the deployer print more supply out of thin air whenever they want? Is freeze authority still active, meaning your wallet could be frozen mid-trade? Both should be revoked on any token worth holding for more than a few minutes. Then watch the dev wallet in real time — a deployer quietly moving tokens to fresh wallets or drip-feeding sells into a pump is prepping an exit, not building a project.

Finally, sanity-check the community. Bought followers and bot-filled Telegrams are cheap and everywhere; look for actual back-and-forth conversation, not just emoji spam and price talk. A project with a real, responsive team and a locked, revoked contract can still fail — but it won't fail because someone planned it that way from block one.
