Check LP status first. On a legitimate token, the liquidity pool (LP) tokens are burned — permanently removed from circulation so the developer can't drain the pool. On Rugcheck.xyz or RugDoc, you can verify this in seconds. If LP is not burned or locked, the developer can pull liquidity at will. That's a hard no.
Look at top holder concentration. If one or two wallets hold 20%+ of the supply, a single sell will crater the price. Legitimate projects typically show more distributed holdings. Birdeye and Solscan both surface holder breakdowns — check them before buying anything with meaningful size.
Watch for fake volume. Wash trading — the same wallet buying and selling to itself — inflates volume metrics and makes a dead token look alive. If a token is showing high volume but the price barely moves and the chart is choppy rather than trending, that's a warning sign. Cross-check trade history on Solscan to see if buys and sells are coming from the same cluster of wallets.
Social signals matter too. Rugs rarely come with active Telegram communities where real questions get real answers. If the Telegram is filled with bots posting GM and price emojis, the developer is almost certainly farming hype rather than building anything real. Muted socials, anonymous teams with no track record, and high-pressure urgency tactics are all red flags.
None of these checks are foolproof — experienced teams can fake all of it long enough to dump. But running a 60-second checklist before every buy is the single best habit a Solana meme trader can build.
