How to Spot a Rug Pull on Solana Before It Happens

Rug pulls are the tax degens pay for playing the Solana meme coin game — and most of them are avoidable if you know what to check before you buy, not after the chart goes vertical.

Start with the liquidity itself. If a token's liquidity pool isn't locked or burned, the developer can pull it at any moment, draining every dollar of buyer money in a single transaction. A block explorer or a dedicated tracker will show you whether LP tokens are locked, burned, or sitting in a wallet the dev controls. No lock, no trust.

Next, look at wallet concentration. If the top 10 holders — excluding the liquidity pool and known burn addresses — control more than 20-30% of supply, that's a coordinated dump waiting to happen. A handful of insider wallets can crash a chart the moment retail buying slows down, and they usually do it together. Bundle-buy patterns at launch, where a cluster of wallets all buy in the same block, are a dead giveaway of an insider setup.

Then there's the softer signals: does the project have a real social presence with organic engagement, or is it bot-farmed replies and a Telegram full of paid shills? Is the contract renounced, or can the dev still mint new tokens and dilute holders at will? Anonymous devs aren't automatically a red flag on pump.fun — nearly everyone launches anonymously — but a dev who's active, responsive, and has shipped before is a better bet than a brand-new wallet with no history.

None of these checks are foolproof, and even "safe-looking" tokens can still dump on pure market forces. But liquidity locks, holder distribution, and launch-pattern analysis catch the majority of outright scams before they cost you money. The five minutes it takes to check is cheaper than the loss.
